A 30-06 is not a beginner’s gun. It’s way too big for the small deer you have in CA. You need to go to and read, read, read. Attend a hunter safety course, then get your license. Then you need to find some older guys who can show you the ropes, starting with LOTS of practice at a gun range, before you go after any deer.

After you follow Okie’s advice aboutr getting plenty of range practice and taking a hunter safety course, get your hunting license at any authorized retailer (usually sporting goods stores) and head up to the northern counties. Just watch out for the pot farmers if you’re around Mendocino.

a 30-06 is a great deer caliber.
for the hunting license there are a few things you need to look at. first thing is first though. you need to get your hunter’s education done before you can hunt so you know what you are doing. they will put you through some mock situations that may happen in real life so you don’t freak out when or if they happen to you.
you can get them at any hunting store or local walmart it think
As for the place i would ask your relatives first. this is so you can gain experience with someone you know.
i will post a link to the California department of fish and game below because you did not state your age. ask you dad or someone you know that hunts to help explain them to you because they can vary by state
this link has all the california regulations for the past hunting year. i suggest that you look for booklets at walmart or other hunting store for the most up to date regulations.

Properly loaded for the situation, the 30-06 is very close to a do-it-all gun. The full loads are fine for moose broadside hits, or shots through a bush at the butt of the trophy deer of a lifetime, and the deer doesn’t get away! Or for a meat hunter who wants the best racks to breed the next herd, the “controlled recoil” midrange loads are just fine and don’t mess up a lot of meat like the full loads would. The Columbia Blacktail deer species you will be hunting top out at 130 lbs. The midrange loads are almost too much for there being acceptable trophy or meat damage, on these small deer. Lots of folks use a 243 on them, as a “surgical tool” for use on deer large or small. I have collected a bunch of hunting and gun articles at , for new hunters to pick up some of the jargon and get a bunch of campfire discussion ammo. You have to scroll down a lot. Regards, Larry.
